If Jesus came to show the world what God is like, what does this parable mean?

This parable means that God is just and He (Jesus) came to the world to show it by doing the right things and nothing is hidden from God as nothing can be hidden from light.The parable also means that we have be justified in everything we do because it will be measured back to us with whatever standard we measure to others.

Why did Jesus´ penalty for "sin" need to include physical and emotional pain - why not just spiritual separation from God?

God is Spirit. Jesus came down from heaven in human form, in everyway as man except sin. Jesus had divine Blood in a human body. This physical body took the punishment due to all the human race because of one man's sin. This physical had to be crucified and had to be glorified in resurrection. All of us who move under grace must crucify our body and be buried with Him in Baptism. for salvation. Only when we crucify our mortal bodies, then only we become partakers of eternal life in Jesus Christ. Jesus was showing the way in HIM.

Can you explain the word picture Jesus uses (vs. 27) about how to rob the house of a strong man?

As Jesus has explained how to rob the strong man that is by tying him first. So to defeat the devil we should first tie our spirit and soul with the word of God. We should have strong self control towards the things of the flesh then we can be successful in our spiritual life.
