What was it about Jesus` answer that caused the Pharisees and Herodians to marvel? The Pharisees and Herodians wanted to test Jesus by asking if it was lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, but Jesus perceived their wickedness and told them that he need not be tested, they were hypocrites. He asked them whose inscription was on the money, to which they answered Caesar`s, to which he answered Give to Caesar the things that belong to Caesar and to God the things that are God`s, and to this answer they marveled.
