Pilate conceded to the crowds demand to crucify Jesus to show his power and administrative authority to quell a religious uprising thus justifying to his peers that he was a capable popular Governor. The Romans were not bothered by the peoples religious differences and had no regard for having to be right or wrong so long as they had the power to rule. This is symptomatic of some powerful rulers even on this day.
