What did you learn about Jesus` background that stands out or surprises you?

What strikes me, or stands out, is that life was simply life; not that much different from our lives, and to them it was perfectly a normal life. It was normal for them to be under Roman rule - normal in a sense that they had somehow gotten used to it, but not normal in that they were satisfied under the Romans. They simply tolerated it and learned to build their lives with it.

They probobly got used to the class system, and having an upper aristocrocy, something totaly strange for most of the world today. Even todays monarchies are different, merged with capitalism and democracy.

It is important that we see the life of Jesus and His time as a 'normal' life for them: Jesus being a carpenter and people buying furniture (or whatever He sold) from Him.

What we forget is the daily strife of life experience by Jesus' contemporaries, and the Pharisees' and Sadducees' class struggle.

But it is important to remember these things, in order to get an acturate picture of who Jesus was, and the reality of His life on earth.

Who Jesus Is

To say 'The historical Jesus' is popular among even those who don't really believe in Him as the Son of God. But as Christians, He is the Son of God, and He is a historican figure.

Jesus was born into a poor family. His family escaped into Egypt when Herod anounced that He was going to kill all boys of Jesus' age. He was raised as a carpenter, most likely working as one professionally.

When He was about thirty he began a ministry in his homeplace of Nazareth, traveling around the country, although centered in Nazareth.

Jesus lived a life of teaching his followers, mentoring those close to Him, and imparting His life.

Some of His teachings angered the Jewish leaders, although He didn't break the Jewish law. Finally the Jews, having enough of Him, decided to have Jesus killed.

Not being able to do this (only the presiding Roman goverment could sentence to death) they tried to 'frame' Him, stretching His words and falsly accusing Him of being a political enemy.

Pilot had no choise but to have his sentenced to death, but shortly after His death, He rose again.

He had been buried, but the grave could not keep Him down, proving that He was stronger than death.

He Is God.
