How did Joseph know it was a real angel appearing to him in his dreams, and not just , for example, indigestion? Joseph had always been obedient to God. In another dream,an angel appeared to Joseph to tell him of Mary's condition and to marry her just the same. Joseph obeyed and seeing that it was true, he believed again this time the angel and obeyed his instructions.

Why did Herod try to kill Jesus? Herod tried to kill Jesus because of the fulfillment of the prophecy as it was written. It was already then prophesied by Jeremiah. Herod was an instrument to let the prophesy came into reality. Everything, even earth and heaven will pass away but God's word will not pass without its fulfillment.
