Can you explain why people put popularity above doing what is right? It's a mob thing. If you go with the tide of multitudes, even if they are wrong, you are with the "in crowd." If you are in the minority and disagree with them, there is a good chance of becoming a social outcast. So you sacrifice what is right for the popular vote even if it is sometimes wrong.

When Peter realised he had denied knowing Jesus, why did he cry? Peter cried because he was proven wrong by Jesus. Remember he vehemently objected that he would deny Jesus. Yet he did and when he realized he was wrong, he wept.
