Define "Compassion"?
"Compassion" means "to feel with" another person so deeply that it moves one to act to alleviate their suffering.  It is the Lord's compassion for our suffering that moved Him to humble Himself, sacrifice Himself, and save us.  It is because of that compassion that He tells us that His Name is "I AM", "I Am the One Who is With You." He is with us in presence, in passion, today, in every circumstance.

What did you learn about Jesus` background that stands out or surprises you?
I did not realize that they spoke Greek in the Roman empire.  I also did not realize that Herod was likely appointed by Rome.  It is helpful to read these details about life in Jesus' day--it helps one picture His life in something more like "living color"!

My Brief Summary of Jesus
Jesus was fully God and fully man.  He was born of the virgin Mary, conceived by the Holy Spirit.  His birth was prophesied numerous times for thousands of years, and these prophecies are recorded in the Old Testament. He lived a sinless life, and began His public ministry at 33 yrs of age. His wisdom and character were evident early on, though, for it is recorded in Scripture how He grew in wisdom, stature and favor with God and man.  It is also noted how, when He was 12 years old, He already amazed the learned teachers and rabbis with His understanding and wisdom regarding the things of God. Still, Jesus never sought public office or public glory. He did not even seek the limelight in the religious circles. He spoke publicly about God to the masses as well as in the synagogues.  He healed the sick, touched the untouchable, cared for the poor, blessed bothersome children, offered hope and forgiveness and redemption to prostitutes and tax collectors, hated by society. He lived simply, worked tirelessly, and lived out justice, mercy, kindness,  truth, forgiveness, compassion.  But even though demons cowered before Him and knew He was the Son of God, most of those who considered themselves religious leaders did not recognize Him, or the truth of God when they saw it.  Instead, they incited a crowd against Him, crucified Him and He was buried in a borrowed grave.  All this happened to fulfill God's plan, and was prophesied in the Scripture, as well as by Jesus, Himself.  He died for our sins, paying a price we could not pay ourselves.  And on the 3rd day, He rose again, was seen by hundreds of His followers over a period of 40 days, then ascended to heaven, and is now seated at the right hand of God.  He has not left us alone, though, He has given us His Holy Spirit as our ever present guide and counselor.  As Jesus died for our sins and rose again, so He has paid for our sins, making a way to restore our relationship with God.  We are saved by faith in the work He has done.
