The veil was torn into two because in earlier days, the holy place was divided by a veil from the most holy place. Only the High Priests could enter into that place. In fact, a High Priest acted as a mediator between man and God. The tearing of the veil symbolises that there is no division hereafter. That is, a permanent link of God's presence to man and man has a direct link to God through the death of Christ. It tells us that there is no need of mediator between God and man hereafter.
