They do exactly what they are warned to avoid running into the danger they are warned against: attack the one sdent by the Father.Rather stupid too.

Why do you think the priests, scribes, elders did not answer Jesus?

Cause they are more afraid of being stoned by men who saw John as the prophet, but they fail to recognise the one John was called to announce.They should have remembered Isaiah. Also, they had studied the Torah, whereas Jesus had been brough up by a carpenter. How could he know so much about the Father's business? the answer could be only one, but they showed more attachment to men than God. Who knew about John lepaing in Elisabeth womb?And also, Jesus was sent from Heaven but also had to be recognised accepted by men on earth. Our free will.My Lord my God will Thomas saying, after placing his hands in his wounds. The elders etc had the knowledge to recognise the one sent by Heaven via his deeds and his words, but are afraid to take a position.
