Why is this old man Simeon so excited to meet this baby Jesus?

He was told he would not die till he had embraced the promised Saviour. So should he not be looking forward to it? we are all afraid of death. Istinctively. But his is not an earthly perspective. With the eyes of Faith in old promises, maintained (the words of the forefathers), he could see that Salvation he now holds in his arms. So fragile so ...he knows and foretells Mary about the sword that will pierce her heart. Behold this child is set for the falling and the rising of many in Israel, and for a sign which is spoken against. Yes, a sword will pierce through your own soul, that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed."He is the sign of salvation and he will be the stumbling stone that will be a stepping stone for some to rise and for some who reject him to stumble upon. The sword makes you think of the soldier piercing Jesus side (Mary's womb) and causing that opening out of which Blood (Mary's blood that had nourished the human placenta) and Water (with which we are all Baptised in matter) came. God can pierce our souls till the bone marrow and see all our innermost thoughts. She carried that piercing Light and when Jesus leaves his body, that Spirit that had incarnated, the Love of God that begot the Son, that same Love that filled her and gave her the strenght to face Calvary for us makes her into the Mother of all. All those who out of love shown want to partake of the Word spoken, incarnated and crucified.Like the veil that was broken into at death and darkness came and that like at creation showed the Ligh, her heart and our hearts in the Confiteor, break open. of cousre she was sinless, but the pain outpoured from her heart clenses ours from the darkness of a lack of self awareness of our sins and thus we can clear cleanse the soil of our hearts and prepare it to recieve that Seed of Salvation nourished like water at Baptism by the Holy Spirit, and feel growing in our arms our fragile salvation and hold our renewed souls in the 'temple' like Simeon heldf Baby Jesus.

What did Mary understand about who was in her womb before the birth of Jesus?

Humble obedience incarnated as the Lord had made her.One question arises: she was not too surprised by the angel regarding the who she was about to conceive, but only the how, as she was a devout Jewess she knew that a child Immanuel had been promised. So she must have known also that those lines in Isaiah about the lamb taken to the altar of sacrifice in silent obedience. A prefiguration of the call her son too was to follow. Had she fully understood? here she is overjoyed by having chosen blessed as the humble channel through which the Savour would come. Had the angels sheltered from full understanding, till Simeon piercing words? was she only thinking of the presentation at the temple the day of the circumcision? If she had not, we are only shown her joy adn not trouble inner pain at the thought of a future that would have become clearer and clearer. How much did Jesus tell her? if the complete truth, to prepare her to help him and Mary Magdalene to help both...it must have happened in the 'womb' of his stay at home prior the beginning of his ministry. For sure, we can only share in her joy. Her agony accompanyng us only on the day the hours of Calvary.She is our Mother and we have to accompany and be accompnaied by her. Contemporaries of them knew nothing. But how heart wrenching for all those who knew about the end (Beginning) of Jesus earthly life. For us too.
