Jesus claimed that after a future period of destruction and distress, he (The Son of Man) will come back to earth with great power and glory. What did Jesus say he would do at that time?

As he ascended to Heaven, so through the same gate he will descend again followed by all the angels. He will BE, rather than 'do', the sign that spring has come and the angels will pluck the good fruit from the branches. False prophets will say they are Christ. He came as Light in Mary's womb and as Light he will descend again as Light in the darkness and turmoil. Fear of God and awe spreadding. The Light, reflected by those pure of heart?

Why does Jesus encourage focusing on the daily task at hand and discourage predicting the future?

Nor the Son. Jesus himself was waiting for the angels to guide him step by step. Focusing chiselling his mission moment by moment, knowing that at some point in the future he would have been called to the culminating act of our salvation. His will is separate from the Father and his knowledge too is only partial. And Mary knew as much as he knew from the Father. From which knoledge and confident though pained hope she could annoint her beloved friend's body.
