How did Joseph know it was a real angel appearing to him in his dreams, and not just , for example, indigestion?

He msut have been spoken too a number of times before by other angels liek Mary and knowing the OT they knew that what was said to them was in line with what prophetised. They treasured everything in the heart and knowledge and guidance was growing feeding on the one previously given. Like a tree sprouting more and more branches and leaves and fruit ''btw doubt that they were rich enough to rsik the dangers of an indegestion but alas am not an historian''.

How did (does) repenting prepare someone for the Kingdom of God?

The voice of one crying in the wilderness, make ready the way of the Lord. Make his paths straight. We are to clear away our souls from anything that might hinder Jesus walking into our souls. Our sins and failures knowing that he loves us of course but through contrition we have to squeeze out any bad seeds from ourselves knowing that he`ll help us and make the temple ready for his coming. Like we do before taking His Body at Mass through the exam of conscience. We can become alive by not mere potentially dead genealogical connection, i mean we can be blood related to Abraham but if we dont abide by the Word that is dead inside us, but by plouhghing and clearing our grounds waiting for the Holy Spirit to plant the seed. Making also amends for ours sins like fasting and sacrificing - John in his camel tunic and eating locusts. Living on what the Lord gves us and knowing that the true manna that saves and gives real life and makes us truly His children the inheritors of the Kingdom is the one that comes from above: His Word His Son. But we need to make as worthy as possible room for His arrival like the Immaculate womb of Mary. He came to save us with His Passion the shedding of His blood. Mary in the womb nourished him with her earthly maternal blood purified by the Lord. We are getting cleansed and redeemed through that very same blood but we need to have the humbleness to kneel gratefully awaiting the outporing literally of his cleansing blood and water that gushed forth from the cross.

Why was it important for Jesus to go through a time of temptation?

To set us an example that noone is exempt from temptations. That the Lord is always with us and that we can win over everything with His help being rooted in Him with that serenity and peace of mind that comes from Faith and an earnest desire to stick to Him. Being firmly calmly and steadily rooted in his Word, the devil has no power on us. We can easily deflect his envious blows with firmness. And the closer to the Lord the harder the envious blows...but the Lord is with us His beloved children entrusted to the protective mantel of Mary ''one of those two hymns said that the rejoicing smily eyes reflect the blue of the clear skies''.
