Why can we be glad when we are weak and suffering difficult circumstances?

We can be glad, once we are reminded that the acquisition of virtue is the work of a lifetime and that God does not grant any instant cure to human weakness.  It seems that God keeps giving us the grace to try again inspite of past failures.  Perfect love and strength are not to be attained by any merely human efforts.  So we can be glad, because we recognize how little our souls are in front of the almighty God, but He loves us individually and takes interest to be our Father.  After each failure, it's His grace that makes us to ask for forgiveness, pick ourselves up and try again.  Very often, what God helps us toward is not the virtue itself, but just this power of trying again!

Why was it important for Jesus to go through a time of temptation?
It's not that it was important for Jesus; it was more important for Satan to tempt Him.  Jesus, trough the forty days and nights of fasting and isolation was preparing Himself eagerly for the time that had come for us, when after that, He had started His 3 years of God's proclamation, teachings and ending up His mission on earth on the Holy cross.  Jesus was tempted because Satan took the opportunity to interfere with God's plans, exactly when Jesus was most eager to prepare Himself and weak at the same time from fasting just like any human being.  Jesus, still held on to His Father, and thus it become an important example for us to not give in.  We will surely get most tempted by the evil, exactly when we start to take God seriously and lovingly; and when we fall vulnerable that's the time when evil leads us to temptation.

Why did Jesus“ penalty for "sin" need to include physical and emotional pain - why not just spiritual separation from God?
Because as humans we can suffer from those three dimensions of pain: physical, emotional, and spiritual.  Altogether, they reach the greatest magnitude of sacrifice.  Jesus really did suffer all those in a brutal way, because I believe the evil itself had the opportunity of a revenge.  It's not that plain and straight to understand the complexity of the pain that Jesus went trough.  It is by grace that we can understand the pain He went trough.  Jesus won His death with His resurrection, and He invites us to take part in winning this glory.  It's not free.  It is available and we must work for it with love in mind by following Christ.  We can never utter words like: "Jesus does not understand my pain!"  He does.
