Whatever Jesus taught people was not going to benefit Him and whatever the scribes and elders taught people made them comfortable and avoid danger.

Why do you think the priests, scribes, elders did not answer Jesus? Jesus had not sinned yet He went to John the Baptist to be baptised. If Jesus had not gone to John to be baptised they would not allow Him to teach people about God.

Why do you think the priests, scribes, elders did not answer Jesus? The priests and elders were afraid to be stoned by the people because people would know they had disobeyed God`s laws when in the case of John te Baptist.
