John was just the warm up before Jesus. The friend of the bridegroom has to step aside for the bridegroom to take center stage "unless one is born anew, he can't see the Kingdom of God." By being born again one becomes qualified to see the Kingdom of God, which before was impossible. It also means, I suppose, that one becomes a 'babe in Christ' and so does "long for the pure milk of the word, so that by it you may grow in respect to salvation" [1 Pt 2:2]
