he followed others as a sheep would and listened to the accusers but caved in to public demand.

Although it was pilates army that executed jesus it was the jews that sentenced him to death.

Initially Pilate wanted a reason, not to  crucify Jesus. Jesus talked to Pilate about His Kingdom as "not of this world" and did not appear to want to usurp Roman rule .

Pilate was frustrated with Jesus and tried to humiliate Him by treating him badly by calling him the "King of the Jews".
