Jesus was well aware of the "keep holy the sabbath day" precept but wanted to show that this precept was meant to be kept with inteligence and not blind obedience. 

This action was a direct challenge to the authority of the priests.

Everybody is different due to their pathways in life. Some people have been taken by fraud and need more convincing.

The very important situation is what one does with true belief in Jesus.
