He would have seen the sign of "Hail the King of the Jews" and how Jesus accepted the abuse given to him. When Jesus said "why have you foresaken me" and the Centurian witnessed the reply in the earthquake and tombs opening. He realised then who was crucified on the cross and said "Truly this was the Son of God". Why did not the Father let the cup pass and spare Jesus the pain of the crucifixion?
