What do you think might have lead Joseph of Arimathaea to be a disciple of Jesus?

Joseph had heard and truely believed in the "good news' taught by Jesus.

Joseph risked death to get permission to preform the burial service as required by Jewish law. Pilate was not convinced Jesus deserved to die so the conditions were right for Joseph to get the body of Jesus.

Why did not the Father let the cup pass and spare Jesus the pain of the crucifixion?

Matthew 26:36-46.  Because that cup held all the sin of mankind, past, present and future and is what God had in mind to yoke Jesus with.  Jesus knew it, yet for all that, He flinched not and in absolute faith, submitted Himself, utterly and humbly sacrificially, to God’s will.

What about Jesus death impressed the Centurian so much that he realised Jesus was the Son of God?

The Centurian would have known the situation with Jesus prior the crucification including the beating and crown of thorns.

He would have seen the sign of "Hail the King of the Jews" and how Jesus accepted the abuse given to him.

When Jesus said "why have you foresaken me" and the Centurian witnessed the reply in the earthquake and tombs opening. He realised then who was crucified on the cross and said "Truly this was the Son of God".
