The tax collectors and prostitutes and ourselves are like the first son, who initially rejected the direction to work in the world, for Jesus.

The second son, represent the hypocrites who are called "christains" who wish to be seen as such but in reality carry out sins against God and Man.

Why did Jesus´ penalty for "sin" need to include physical and emotional pain - why not just spiritual separation from God?
Because unless Jesus had experienced the entire gamut of human sensations, it could be argued by his antagonists that He was in a privileged position.  His separation from the Father was absolutely mandatory.

Why did Jesus answer a question with a question rather than just telling the Pharisees by what authority He acted?

The Pharisees wanted to trap Jesus to discredit Him in the eyes of the people. Jesus realised their plan and reversed the situation making the Pharisees discredited and wondering about the true authority under whom, Jesus acted.

The reversal caused further anger in the priests as they looked for reasons to kill Him.
