  • Simultaneous external events intensified the drama

Words / EventSignificance (Traditional Spiritual Interpretation)
Words: "Father, forgive them, for they don't know what they are doing." Jesus prays for the executioners who do not understand or believe that Jesus is God.
Words: "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" Jesus (quoting a line from the Jewish scriptures) cries out at a moment in time when he is not just physically punished, but spiritually separated from God, his Father. God separates Himself from Jesus because all of the evils of mankind are placed on Jesus. This spiritual separation is the heaviest sacrifice which Jesus pays of behalf of mankind, so that mankand does not need to suffer spiritual separation from God.
Words: "It is finished." Once Jesus felt he had borne the penalty for the evils of mankind, he declared his mission as accomplished. This relates to Jesus' earlier mission statement to sacrifice himself for others: "The Son of Man came not to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many." (Jesus quoted by Matthew 20:28)
Words: "Assuredly I tell you, today you will be with me in Paradise." These words, spoken to a thief also being executed with Jesus, indicates Jesus' belief that Jesus would continue to live in paradise (heaven) and that Jesus can choose who will be there with him.
Words: "Father, into your hands I commit my spirit." Jesus believes his spirit, not body, now goes to heaven with God.
Event: Earthquake (recorded in Matthew 27:52) Highlights severity of the moment.
Event: Skies Darken (recorded in Matthew 27:45 and Luke 23:44) Highlights severity of the moment.
Event: Temple veil splits in half (recorded in Matthew 27:51, Mark 15:38, Luke 23:44) This event signified that there is no more division between man and God. In the Jewish temple, a veil blocked the area known as the "holy of holies." It was recognized as a place where God might be present. Only once a year was the chief priest able to enter the area to offer a sacrifice for the sins of the people. The symbolism of the veil being torn in two is that with Jesus paying the penalty for mankind's sins, sacrifices were no longer necessary, and everyone can enter the presence of God.
Event: Spear thrust into Jesus' side (recorded in John 19:34) Roman soldier confirms Jesus is dead.
Statement by witnessing Roman soldier: "Certainly this was a righteous man!" (recorded in Luke 23:47) Jesus' innocence is recognized.
Statement by witnessing Roman soldier: "Truly this was the Son of God." (recorded in Matthew 27:54 and Mark 15:38) Jesus' prominence is recognized.

Why did Jesus` penalty for sin need to include physical and emotional pain-why not just spiritual separation from God?
Jesus needed to include physical and emotional pain because He was human and he needed to show us that he too endured all emotions and physical pain that we will feel. I do not think that most us would not have understood spiritual separation from God since our capacity as human beings cannot handle the Greatness of God. When Adam and Eve sinned we had been separated from God. It is through Jesus Christ that the communication was opened to us.

Why did Jesus? penalty for sin need to include physical and emotional pain - why not just spiritual separation from God?
As it was in practice before the birth of Jesus Christ in the Old Testament. Whenever the Jews go away from God, evil things usually comes over to them, and to appease God then, they have to sacrifice a ram or burn offering so that their sins could be forgiven. It was also said that without shedding of blood, their will be no remittance for sin. This singular aspect is what Jesus Christ came to fulfill when He said it is finished. Therefore, it has become abomination to God for anybody called christian to made any sacrifice to God through killing of ram or in any form because the ONLY BEGOTTEN SON - JESUS has bore this on the cross for all HIS followers. What it is remain is to believe in Him and propagate Him to unbelievers.

Jesus` sacrifices involved everything. He took over our sins, , and our sins are grave that He must sacrifice everything not only spiritual separation from God but also physical and emotional pain.

Maybe its because when man was separated from God, that separation caused both physical and emotional pain to man. Remember when Adam and Eve committed a sin against God, He said that man will work on the ground and He will make child-bearing a painful process. And since we are designed to be dependent on God, that separation left a open hole in our hearts that could only be filled by God.

I think that Jesus showed the world that he was the son of God here on earth in a human body with human emotions. Suffered and die on the cross for us All!And who believes that he is Christ Jesus our Lord. Read Romans 8:1-17

This is because he came in the flesh in the form of man. So that man will not give excuse of not knowing the truth about God.

If you get caught speeding in your car, you get a fine. Dont pay your taxes, you go to prison. You have to pay the penalty. Imagine what all the penalties for all the sins would be? Maybe it did not need to be so bloody, but maybe that was satan trying to break Jesus. Jesus could have stopped the events at anystage, but he didnt. Why? So we will not have to pay in that way. Spiritual separation from God. If you have a bottle that has a vacuum inside and the top securely fixed. Now open that top, and all the air rushes in. When God separated Himself from Jesus that`s what happened.

I think someone else said it in a nutshell, the wages of sin is death. If He, paying for our sin, just was seperated from God then that might not have satisfied God`s demand for justice. Also, think about how in the OT how God deals with sin. He absolutely cannot stand it, and this shows His hatred for sin that He would be willing to put His son, Jesus Christ, through this so that we may have life. That is the only thing that could make us right with God.
