Notable Aspects

  • Words of witnesses emphasized prominence of Jesus
  • Death (from asphyxiation) was conclusive
  • Simultaneous external events intensified the drama

Words / EventSignificance (Traditional Spiritual Interpretation)
Words: "Father, forgive them, for they don't know what they are doing." Jesus prays for the executioners who do not understand or believe that Jesus is God.
Words: "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" Jesus (quoting a line from the Jewish scriptures) cries out at a moment in time when he is not just physically punished, but spiritually separated from God, his Father. God separates Himself from Jesus because all of the evils of mankind are placed on Jesus. This spiritual separation is the heaviest sacrifice which Jesus pays of behalf of mankind, so that mankand does not need to suffer spiritual separation from God.
Words: "It is finished." Once Jesus felt he had borne the penalty for the evils of mankind, he declared his mission as accomplished. This relates to Jesus' earlier mission statement to sacrifice himself for others: "The Son of Man came not to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many." (Jesus quoted by Matthew 20:28)
Words: "Assuredly I tell you, today you will be with me in Paradise." These words, spoken to a thief also being executed with Jesus, indicates Jesus' belief that Jesus would continue to live in paradise (heaven) and that Jesus can choose who will be there with him.
Words: "Father, into your hands I commit my spirit." Jesus believes his spirit, not body, now goes to heaven with God.
Event: Earthquake (recorded in Matthew 27:52) Highlights severity of the moment.
Event: Skies Darken (recorded in Matthew 27:45 and Luke 23:44) Highlights severity of the moment.
Event: Temple veil splits in half (recorded in Matthew 27:51, Mark 15:38, Luke 23:44) This event signified that there is no more division between man and God. In the Jewish temple, a veil blocked the area known as the "holy of holies." It was recognized as a place where God might be present. Only once a year was the chief priest able to enter the area to offer a sacrifice for the sins of the people. The symbolism of the veil being torn in two is that with Jesus paying the penalty for mankind's sins, sacrifices were no longer necessary, and everyone can enter the presence of God.
Event: Spear thrust into Jesus' side (recorded in John 19:34) Roman soldier confirms Jesus is dead.
Statement by witnessing Roman soldier: "Certainly this was a righteous man!" (recorded in Luke 23:47) Jesus' innocence is recognized.
Statement by witnessing Roman soldier: "Truly this was the Son of God." (recorded in Matthew 27:54 and Mark 15:38) Jesus' prominence is recognized.

Why did Jesus? penalty for sin need to include physical and emotional pain - why not just spiritual separation from God?
The sin is committed via the body and the spirit. Even satan is spirit and can be able to transformed on mankind body. That is the examples of satan`s servant ''Angels of satan'' they can be spirit and also mankind. That why they attack the body of God` s cheldrens by sickness, accidents, ....or spiritually by sins commitment... That why Jesus for saving us had to accept that his body be destroyed for us in order to fortify our body and in order to give us an example on how we must be aignst satans attacks. Also spirtualy because we are made spiritually and physically. And God will judje our spirit not our body. Many thanks for your good ininiative for teaching us via this lesson. You will excuse me for the poor english because I am usually french.

I don`t understand the need for pain, but the Bible predicts that he must die, and a just and righteous God cannot overlook evil. His painful death helps us understand the extent of His love and commitment to His mission.

Why did Jesus? penalty for sin need to include physical and emotional pain - why not just spiritual separation from God?
Jesus penalty for sin need to include physical and emotional pain because through his sufferings we as believers might know that carrying his cross is not easy thing. If we deceided to follow Jesus, then we must be ready to bear all sufferings and pain and persecutions and even death when it comes. And also Jesus has shown us an example of how to endure sufferings that we might meet and to be ready to bear it. Jesus was innocent and without sin, yet he was crucified as a criminal for our sins. He took all our faults on him and paid the price that we were to pay. Jesus cannot be spiritually separated from God. Jesus is God, God the father, the son and the holy spirit. The trinity are one, so God send his beloved son into the world to die for us and washed all our sins and without Jesus we will not meet God. Because Jesus is the way to the father.

Why did Jesus? penalty for sin need to include physical and emotional pain - why not just spiritual separation from God?
Because this is the same pains that we have to endure. To show us that He has also endured the same pains as we go though, that we understand He know exactly how we feel and what we are going through in the satges of our life.

Why did Jesus? penalty for sin need to include physical and emotional pain - why not just spiritual separation from God?
JEsus` penalty for our sins need pains - physical and emotional in order for us to feel how painful it is to be departed from him. if it includes spiritual separation, obviosly God did not allowed it to happen because we are his children, we are his people that he loved from the very beginning. God knows our rising and our sitting, so he only allowed physical and emotional pains. God did these because of his great love for us, God is love. as christians, we should tell the wondrous love God had shared to us, let`s always remember that Jesus will really forgive and recieve us. let`s give him our ALL, our evrything to him. as we can see and witness people around us is a problem that some don`t see the needs of others- a need to be reached out. What happens, is, people don`t go to Him and do not look for Him. That`s why there`s so much pain and suffering in the world.

Every disobedient has physical and emotional punishment. This is what Jesus received for us. the Bible says, he was chastized and the pains he bore, he did for us. He went on the cross for us to reedeem us. to save us he took our place. it couldn`t be just spiritual separation because of the gravity of our transgressions. he carry our sins our sicknesses our pain on the cross. He took our place evil as we were. And today e are free from all of those many bondage nd slavery.
