Jesus provides power to resist temptation
All of us are tempted, we all fall, and we have to face the consequences, but God never stops being our Father. The proof of that is Jesus. There`s an interesting detail in this story. It says that Eve took the fruit and then she ate it. Take and eat, the two verbs that describe her sin. Take and eat. Sound familiar? It`s the same two words that Jesus uses thousands of years later at the last supper, when he says, "This is my body, broken for you. Take and eat." In his death and resurrection Jesus reverses the fall, and he uses the same two verbs that did us in to save us. He takes our sin that was so great that we crucified our creator and he turns it 180 degrees around and uses that sin to purchase our salvation. Then he gives us the power to resist temptation. The same devil that tempted Adam and Eve tempted Jesus thousands of years later in the wilderness. In fact the Bible says that Jesus was tempted in every way that we`re tempted and he resisted. That power that resisted the devil way back then is available to us today if we know him, so that we can rise above the lies the devil tells us, that would wreck our lives, and live the abundant life Jesus came to give us.

God with us provides power
One day a man named Moses is walking through the wilderness, and he sees this burning bush. A voice speaks out of it and it says,
  • Moses, I`ve seen the misery of my people the human race. I`ve come to rescue them, and I want to use you. I want you to lead my people. I want you to go to Pharaoh, the most powerful man on earth, and defy him and lead the people into freedom.

Moses` response, if you know that story, is a series of objections why he could never be what God wanted him to be, or do what God wanted him to do. He starts by saying,

  • Who am I? Who am I? I`m a fugitive. I killed a guy. I`m in exile. I`m a shepherd living in the wilderness. I don`t have the gifts. I am slow of speech and slow of tongue. Don`t get your hopes up with me, God. I am what I am.

    God says,

  • I know. I know all about your inadequacies and your weakness. It doesn`t matter. You am who you am, but you am not yet who you am gonna be, for Moses, I will be with you. Now it`ll be you and Me.

If you know the story, you know that Moses has another objection here. Moses says,

  • Who are you? Suppose I go to the Israelites and say, "The God of your fathers has sent me, " and they ask me, "What`s his name? What shall I tell them?" God said to Moses, "I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: I AM has sent me to you." ''Exodus 3:13-14''

I AM the God who wants to be known. I AM the God who heard when no one thought I was listening. I AM the God who saw the misery of my people when nobody thought I was looking. I knew you Moses when you were a baby in the reeds, and I knew you in the desert as a fugitive. And now I have come down. I AM the God who comes down. Get your hopes up, Moses. Get your hopes up. I AM who I AM.

"I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you. However, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven." ( Luke 10:18-20)

Jesus Tells Followers to Expect Power from On High
