Okay I am going to chime in on this one too. I am making some changes right now in my life in this area. The thoughts shared here are some good ones. I think Beverly is right about simplifying. I’m learning to focus my time on what matters most and being okay with not getting everything done that others are doing around me. The question I’m asking myself right now is what is going to matter at the end of my life. What I’m discovering is that people matter. So I’m trying to love a few people in my life really well right now. I believe that is what Jesus would advice me to do.

Stress: How has Jesus helped you?
Hello everyone. Great thought from everyone. Thank you. I have studied the life of Jesus as a Sunday School teacher for many years. I reached a point in my life many years ago where I realized that my life was too complicated and busy. I learned to dial it down several notches and live a slower, more paced and balanced life. When you look at the life of Jesus, you will find a man got away regularly (seemingly every morning) to recharge his spiritual batteries in communion with the Father. If Jesus needed to do that, boy do I. We all have the same amount of time to spend every day. I’ve come to discover that I have a richer life with more lasting fruit at the end of the day when I try to accomplish less and invest more time doing the most important things. For me, that means investing my time in me and feeding my spirit, my soul and my body all the healthy things needed for an abundant life. It takes much less than I used to think and yet more of the things I used to neglect.

Western cultures like America are focused so much on time and this makes life less happy. Eastern cultures are more focused on togetherness. Putting people before time is a happier way to live life. I think Jesus put people before things. He seems to give of himself freely to care for the needs of people. So many Christians do not behave like Jesus. They seem to miss all his points. I think it is possible to be a Christian and be like Jesus. I don’t think Christians should be so different than Jesus. Please tell me whether you agree.

Stress: How has Jesus helped you?
I’m one of those people who feels angst about missing opportunities in life. I seldom feel that I’m taking full advantage of time. At the end of the day I look back and feel like I wasted many opportunities. It’s like I’m always feeling stress because of it. You know what I mean?

I’ve been reading the Bible to get some ideas to better cope with this issue. I came across the passage where Jesus is spending time in a home and one woman (Martha) is scurrying about making preparations and is frustrated that another woman (Mary) isn’t helping out but is spending time with Jesus. Martha asks Jesus to have Mary help her out but Jesus instead teaches Martha that she’s choosing the lesser of the two options. Mary, he says, is just being with Jesus and that’s the better option and that he will not rob her of that time together just to get dinner ready.

This helped me plenty. Life is short, granted. Opportunities are limited. But, spending my life trying to accomplish as many tasks as possible is not way to live life. Life is meant to be more than trying to fulfill everyone’s agendas. I’ve even come to believe that life doesn’t really happen amidst such busyness. Life happens in between all the tasks. It’s all about connecting with people and with God. Naturally, there’s nothing wrong with getting things done but when that’s the focus of my life, there’s something wrong. Healthy balance comes when I put people ahead of the busyness and rest in knowing that my value isn’t based on my accomplishments or productivity. My value is established in who I am. I can rest in just being me and know that my worth doesn’t change one way or the other based on how much I accomplish or not.
