The way to hear the Holy Spirit is to still yourself before God. Prayer is a good place to begin preparing our hearts to hear God speak through His Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit can be heard as we read God's Word, the Bible, or as we listen to someone teach about Jesus--or simply when someone speaks to us and God uses them as an instrument of His voice for that moment. He sometimes speaks through circumstances in our lives. But we must be cautious not to think we hear the Holy Spirit just because we get an impression or think something-or because someone says they are speaking on God's behalf. That can be dangerous.

The way to know whether we are truly hearing the Holy Spirit is to compare what we think we're hearing to what the Bible says. If our impressions align themselves to Holy Spirit's Word, we may possibly be hearing Him. But if they do not, then we are not hearing the Holy Spirit speak. The Holy Spirit always confirms what God's Word says, and never contradicts it.
