Self righteousness: Is it a virtue or a vice in entering the Kingdom of God?

What made Jesus` teaching so attactive to tax collectors and prostitutes?
Primarily, Jesus was on the topic of Repentence and forgiveness which was preached to the jews. He confirmed that John the Baptist was indeed a righteous man, but the Jews who also presumed to be highly righteous neither believed John, nor repented from their sins as John demanded. John`s message was: Repent, and be baptised, so that you will be forgiven, but the Pharisees, in their own righteousness neither repented, nor were they forgiven. Those who repented, and found forgiveness were the so called `rejects of society`- i.e: the tax-collectors and the prostitutes. These were people who earned their living using corrupted means or morals, and so were considered as disgraced humans in society. The tax collectors, and prostitutes found no love, no recognition, no honour, no acceptability in the world of righteousness. No wonder the message of Jesus appealed to such marginalised sector of the society. Jesus won them back, and restored dignity to them. A good example was the short taxcollector called Uncle Zack.
