Why did the multitude want Barabbas released rather than Jesus? `Salvation at the last minute.` Jesus knew very well it is the right thing to happen to him at the right time did not talk with weakness to defend himself from death against the multitude and Barabas the Thief. Jesus wanted to give Barabas a chance to live by keeping quiet and not saying both of us should die the same death though he knows Barabas is a criminal he wanted him to have time to repent and be saved too.
The multitude wanted Barabas released because the elders and the chief priests told them that Jesus blasphemed by calling himself the Christ.

What did Judas gain by betraying Jesus? Nothing. He was one step of the ladder to fulfill what was foretold by Prophet Jeremiah. If he had not returned the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and the elders they would not have bought the potter`s field.
