What did Judas gain by betraying Jesus?

Nothing. He was one step of the ladder to fulfill what was foretold by Prophet Jeremiah. If he had not returned the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and the elders they would not have bought the potter`s field.

Why did Jesus invest so much in Peter even though He knew that Peter would deny Him?

Jesus knew that after him Peter will be a strong member who will make the word and the reality of Jesus coming to the world spread to the whole world.

Why did the high priest view it as blasphemy when Jesus acknowledged that he was the Christ, the Son of God?

The High Priest was a learned Jew who knew what blasphemy was. He in his faithless state did not believe that Jesus was/is the son of God and Jesus was not blaspheming rather than telling them the fact of his destiney; going to the Father ''GOD''. The high priest is more in the books of scriptures about the Messiah but he was not give the chance by his beliefs and education to recognise Jesus.
