This was proclaimed by the prophet Isaiah 2:1-3 Why did Jesus´ penalty for "sin" need to include physical and emotional pain - why not just spiritual separation from God? Jesus was sent here to die for our sins. He had to suffer physical and emotional pain so that mankind can witness and know of the great sacrifice he made for us and be more aware of the truth, that he is our lord and saviour.

"Was Jesus trying to incite his death (eg. temple cleansing, accusation of leaders?) I dont think Jesus was trying to incite his death. Jesus knew what was about to happen therefore he was doing a summary of all that he had done and said before and emphasizing his final lessons beofre he was betrayed and handed over to be cruxified.
