What caused Nathanael to see Jesus as the Son of God and King of Israel?
Nathanael believed that Jesus is the son of God because Jesus knew him and told him what he has been doing even before Nathanael came . In our real life, even before we ask God to help us in our daily lives, He already knows it.

What caused Nathanael to see Jesus as the Son of God and King of Israel?
The fact that although he has never seen Jesus before him, Jesus knew him. Only God can do that. The importance of direct eye witnessing is stressed here. Jesus asks Philip to follow him to N. and then he introduces him for what he knows a man of no deceit. Also it is important that Philip introduces Jesus with reference to the OT the knowledge of treasuring of which they both share: We have found him, of whom Moses in the law, and the prophets, wrote: Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph. The last words pronmounced by Jesus one more confirm by bringing more promises.

I guess it is a question. Was the fig tree Jesus saw Nathanael under visisble from where they had walked? Maybe Jesus saw Nathanael in His mind.

What caused Nathanael to see Jesus as the Son of God and King of Israel?
Jesus saw him under a fig tree before Philip called him. Nathanael was in a far distance but Jesus saw him at that far which made him believed in his being son of God and the King of Israel.

Jesus Calls Philip and Nathanael

On the next day, he was determined to go out into Galilee, and he found Philip. Jesus said to him, "Follow me." Now Philip was from Bethsaida, of the city of Andrew and Peter. Philip found Nathanael, and said to him, "We have found him, of whom Moses in the law, and the prophets, wrote: Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph."
Nathanael said to him, "Can any good thing come out of Nazareth?"
Philip said to him, "Come and see."
Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him, and said about him, "Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom is no deceit!"
Nathanael said to him, "How do you know me?"
Jesus answered him, "Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you."
Nathanael answered him, "Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are King of Israel!"
Jesus answered him, "Because I told you, 'I saw you underneath the fig tree,' do you believe? You will see greater things than these!" He said to him, "Most certainly, I tell you, hereafter you will see heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man."
