Small gesture?!
He thought first of him and last of himself. I wouldn`t say it seems small. He even pleads permission from the guards to heal him. What a great lesson of love...

Jesus knew the hour of his death as dictated from above for him to be tortured and killed. He said to the multitude that when they were in the temple they did not stretch out hands against him but this is their hour today.

Eye to eye with Jesus
He came near to Jesus to kiss him. But Jesus said to him, Judas, do you betray the Son of Man with a kiss? Jesus warns Judas saying what he is about to do. Now I understand where Judas had the opportunity to exercise his free will. He doesn`t. He doesn`t stand by Jesus but he persists. It`s a very direct question. It`s a yes/no question. Judas looks at him in the eye and says yes: he acts in full consent. When eye to eye with Jesus Peter burst into tears.

Jesus Arrested

While he was still speaking, behold, a multitude, and he who was called Judas, one of the twelve, was leading them. He came near to Jesus to kiss him. But Jesus said to him, "Judas, do you betray the Son of Man with a kiss?"
When those who were around him saw what was about to happen, they said to him, "Lord, shall we strike with the sword?" A certain one of them struck the servant of the high priest, and cut off his right ear.
But Jesus answered, "Let me at least do this"--and he touched his ear, and healed him. Jesus said to the chief priests, captains of the temple, and elders, who had come against him, "Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs? When I was with you in the temple daily, you didn't stretch out your hands against me. But this is your hour, and the power of darkness."
