Calling of sinners
John, a great friend of Jesus, wrote when he was an old, old man:
  • How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called the children of God! And that is what we are! ''I John 3:1a''

That is what we are! We didn't do anything for that one. And if any one of you here right now thinks that you're not qualified, that there's too much junk, too much brokenness, too much darkness in your life, hear Jesus' words. This is what Jesus said:

  • I have not come to call ''that word again'' the righteous, but sinners. ''Mark 2:17''

How did Jesus behave in sharp contrast to how religious leaders acted?
Jesus showed his great love for sinners. Religous leaders question him about associating with sinners.Jesus asks us to reach out for thoses who sin spend time with them so that maybe they will change their ways and follow Him.Jesus doesn`t need to help those who are already converted.

How did Jesus behave in sharp contrast to how religious leaders acted?
Instead of shunning sinners for their ways, as the leaders would do, Jesus sat with the sinners. He would rather help the sinners mend their ways than ignore them because they are already sinners.

The religious leaders used to avoid the Tax collectors and sinners. But Jesus used to even eat with them.

How did Jesus behave in sharp contrast to how religious leaders acted?
There is no other religious leader who can compare to Jesus. Jesus is the way and the truth and the life. He came to us to teach us, to touch us, to forgive us, to save us, to love us. Luke 4:18-19: `The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has chosen me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set free the oppressed and announce that the time has come when the Lord will save his people.

How did Jesus behave in sharp contrast to how religious leaders acted?
He wanted them to see that they need to love each and every person no matter if they are good or bad. It just wanted to set an example for the scribes and pharisees.

    The Calling of Levi

He went out again by the seaside. All the multitude came to him, and he taught them. As he passed by, he saw Levi, the son of Alphaeus, sitting at the tax office, and he said to him, "Follow me." And he arose and followed him.
It happened, that he was reclining at the table in his house, and many tax collectors and sinners sat down with Jesus and his disciples, for there were many, and they followed him. The scribes and the Pharisees, when they saw that he was eating with the sinners and tax collectors, said to his disciples, "Why is it that he eats and drinks with tax collectors and sinners?"
When Jesus heard it, he said to them, "Those who are healthy have no need for a physician, but those who are sick. I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance."

    Mark 2:13-17
