Why did the multitude want Barabbas released rather than Jesus?
The chief priests and the elders had persuaded the multitudes to demand so. To the multitudes, they were manipulated to believe that Jesus committed a crime against the law of Moses, while Barnabbas committed only a crime against the Roman law. The multitude had a choice, but they literally made the wrong choice.

What did Judas gain by betraying Jesus?
Even the thirty pieces of silver which he had counted as gain became loss, besides losing his life. He became a public ridicule to the chief priests and the eders. His confession to them was useless, as the power to forgive lay squarely with the son of God he had betrayed. If Judas had humbled himself to Jesus with such a confession of having betrayed innocent blood, I believe Jesus would still have found enough space to forgive him, but he Judas chose to commit suicide.

What made Peter so afraid to be identified with Jesus? Why are many people today still afraid to identify with Jesus?
As for Peter, his woes started in the garden at gethsemane, where he had a personal vendatta with Jesus. Jesus reminded him of the scriptures thus- the shepherd would be attacked, and the sheep of the flock would be scattered. Peter asserted himself that it would not be possible for him to deny or abandon Jesus, even if it were to the point of death. Personally, I think that Peter was now faced with espionage strategy: ie, to follow Jesus - up to the end - death. To be a spy, one need not be discovered or identified humanly. So Peter was simply consealing his identities, inorder to accomplish his mission. Alas, he didn`t know this would ammount to denial of the Lordship of Jesus. True, many of us christians still switch off faith, and try to accomplish our targets in carnal manners, incase we might be marginalised by the world. eg, a jobseeker may conseal her jesus if she is seeking employment as a bar maid.
